I would like to say this does not apply to everyone and is in no way true for the whole DeviantArt community
I wanted to share some information on how I chose my user icon because I wanted to answer a question in the forums ehehe ^_^''
I've included some citations as well where I got the information. Alright we're good? Okay ehm---I'
To be honest I would have love to make a poll but I'm afraid I won't be able to account for the whole DA population.

INTRODUCTION

It's scary to think that people judge you by your avatar, and that's something research has proved. In a world where people are so busy you only have a split-second to make a good first impression and one of them is your profile picture, icon or avatar. Take note this is only supposed to serve as a guide, since there is no research on effect DeviantArt Avatars on attracting audiences. The following are tips on what to consider when choosing and making your very own profile picture, icon or avatar.

QUALITY OF AVATAR

This can come as a surprise but whether your avatar is a picture or a pixel art the important part is the quality. Blurry avatars are less likely to be appealing and if there is one element that lets so many profile pictures, icons or avatars down, it's the lack of sharpness (Smith, 2010). This can explain why pixels can easily catch one’s attention. What’s important is that your avatar should be recognizable. One way is to try simplifying it to its basic shapes.

PIXEL OR PICTURE?

People will most likely click a pixel avatar due to its sharpness. Pixel avatars stand out because their hard shapes are easy to process in high-pixel density displays from a distance compared to normal pictures used as avatars. It sacrifices high detail for simplicity allowing them to be easily recognizable. A simple design allows for easy recognition and allows the avatar to be memorable.

This is not to say that pixels are the most effective avatar because some people feel that using pixels is "lazy". On one hand, pixels have more room for shortcuts and it’s easier to hide the problems (Jason Perry).

On the other hand, Pixel avatars can also be an indicator of the artists skills as with pixel art you're constrained by the size of the grid and pixels that you have to create the look that you want within those constraints. (Nelson, 2013). It's tricky but you can tell when someone has put a lot of care into their art.

ANIMATED OR NOT?

Animated avatars are more likely to attract people’s attention compared to static ones. People stop scrolling when they see an interesting animation. Bizzare and spastic animation can let the eye linger longer while repetitive gestures in a loop can be relaxing to look at. Animation can also help grab audiences.

AUDIENCE

You have to take into account your audience.  What audience are you targeting? Are they interested in traditional painting? digital art? etc. You can create an avatar that aligns with your interests, this can cause people who have the same interests are you to click your avatar. But that can beat the idea of having your avatar represent you (you can skip this one)

This is where the interesting part comes in. Google Analytics. If you're a premium member you can easily find the dempgraphics of your audience. Their location, whether they're male or female, including their interests. If you're not a premuim member you can check out the demographics of the whole Deviantart community by clicking here. As we can see, US users are outnumbered by the rest of the world but they contribute to a lot of the views in the DA community for the past 30 days. Most of these users age range are found to be in 18-24 years and most general interests revolve around leisure and hobbies. By creating an avatar that caters to this specific demographic there may be a huge possibility to attracting an audience.
Now I can't prove this since I don't have the research for it, there are numerous factors as well, such as the audience the DA user interacts with the most which means these DA demographics cannot be true for everyone in this site. There's also timezones but----we won't go over those. Cough I've gotten way out of topic

COLOR

Color is a nice way to showcase your personality. There have been numerous psychological research proving that color affects how people respond to you. I’m not going in too deep in the color psychology since that’s not my expertise but I can give a brief explanation. If you want to look into the subject you can read Faber Birren’s works. He was a consultant on color and color theory with numerous books on the subject.
WARM COLORS
When it comes to color, Yellow catches our attention the first. It's seen before other colors when placed against black (Rikard, 2015). Red calls our attention the most. It has the property of appearing to be nearer than it is and therefore it can serve as a replacement for yellow if it's not your type. Given that DA has a green theme, warm colors like red, orange, yellow can be quite the eyesore but they stand out nonetheless.
COOL COLORS
Cool colors like blue stimulate us mentally elicitng curiosity, seeing a beautiful starry night sky avatar might make you wonder. You might even click the avatar just to see who this mysterious deviant is. Green is a color that won't stand out here in DeviantArt given it's green theme as well (unless its neon green) but it's the easiest in the eyes.
Now this isn't to say you should limit yourself to only one color but combining these colors can be a powerful tool. Dark colors are strong complements to bright colors. Which is why combining colors with light values (such as green and yellow) are harder to process.

CONSISTENCY

Try not change your avatar too much, your avatar is something people will associate you with. According to Brad Colbow (2010), a person’s avatar (or profile picture) is their personal brand and with any brand, consistency is key. Your avatar becomes your logo and it will be seen everywhere. In a world where people’s attention span is getting shorter, you only have a short time to create a first impression, consistency can make it easier for you. Now I’m not saying you shouldn’t change your profile picture! This is deviantart be free!

POSITIVE VIBES!

Smiling avatars---Hohoho! I know it sounds silly but smiling creates an instant connection. It gives the sense of youthfulness making you instantly more approachable.(Dodaro,2016). This should come as no surprise but people are more attracted to positive traits! Creative avatars with open eyes, smiling expression and harmless circle shapes are more likely to signal welcomeness, agreeableness and optimism.
First! these are just things I found to be useful when deciding on your profile picture/icon. I'm not condoning you to follow these steps because your Deviantart icon is something only you have full control of. You can have a picture of your favorite fruit, or a picture of the starry sky, you have the freedom to choose what represents you. Second, I wanted to give my thought and opinions on a forum topic I found in Deviantart. Third, I hope you guys have a wonderful day!

I would love to hear what you guys have to say or add but as for now that's all I got ^_^''
